Abstract Accurate dynamical models are imperative to the development of accurate monitoring and control systems, which foundational safety in construction infrastructure projects. However, highly coupled non-linear dynamics crane systems requires application many simplifying assumptions model. To achieve control, simplifications should yield minimal error modelled behaviour for maximal reduction model complexity. limited information is available on situational suitability different combinations tower models. This paper informs designers optimal represent boom cranes, with respect characteristics selection criteria. The determined though comparison ten 2D 3D representation three variations that commonly deployed sites. includes analysis over 100 simulations experimentation. value presented framework facilitating develop systems.
